Method 2: How to Use the Send to Kindle for Mac App. With the help of ’Send to Kindle for Mac’, you can share your documents from Mac directly with the following steps. There are two ways of using a dictionary on Kindle devices. (Please see below for more details on compatibility and dictionary settings for your particular model of Kindle.)
First, you can set it as your default dictionary (also called primary dictionary in early models). Once you have done this, you can select a word for lookup and view its definition in a pop-up window without leaving the book you’re reading.
Second, you can type words in the search dictionary box. You need to access the dictionary directly from your Kindle’s Library in order to use this feature. On a Kindle, the box will appear at the bottom of the screen; on a Kindle Oasis, Kindle Voyage, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Fire, or Kindle app, click on the magnifying glass icon to bring up the search interface. You can input a word and go directly to its entry.
You can also browse through the full list of words included in the dictionary. To do this, go to the Table of Contents and select the ’A-Z’ link.

In Kindle for iOS, Kindle for Android, or Kindle Fire (Fire OS 4+), perform the following steps:
Tap on a word to look it up. When the Dictionary pop-up window appears, you will see a button with either the name of the current default dictionary or the text ’Change Dictionary’. Tap on this button to bring up the list of available dictionaries, then select the dictionary you want to use as default from the list.
On a 4th generation or later Kindle, Kindle Oasis, Kindle Paperwhite, or Kindle Voyage, perform the following steps:
Press the Home key. At the Home screen, select Menu, then Settings. At the Settings screen, the next step will depend on your device:
*On the Kindle, scroll down until you see ’Dictionaries’, then select it
*On the Kindle Oasis, Voyage, or Paperwhite, select ’Language and Dictionaries’, then ’Dictionaries’
In the Dictionaries list, you can select a default dictionary for each language for which you have multiple dictionaries. For example, if you have dictionaries for English, Spanish and German, you will see these languages listed along with the current default dictionary for each. (If you only have one dictionary for a particular language, it is pre-selected as default and there is nothing you need to do.)
When multiple dictionaries are available for a particular language, either a right arrow or the text “change default” will be displayed in the right margin. There may be a few reasons for this behavior.
a. Words that are not in the dictionary will not be found. Just like when you buy a print dictionary, the words contained in the dictionary correspond to the size of the volume. For example, it is easy to see the difference when comparing the print versions of a standard and an Unabridged dictionary; the Unabridged is significantly larger. The Collins dictionaries we offer are among the largest in the Collins line. Additionally, certain word types like proper names, technical jargon, or words that are short-lived (like invented words or slang) probably won’t be there.
b. Certain Kindles have a built-in list of words considered too common to look up. There is also a specific list for each language. For example, in Spanish, words like ’me’, ’y’, ’había’ and ’a’ are on the list. In English, words like ’the’, ’that’, ’are’, ’has’, ’a’, and ’an’ are on the list. When you try to select a word on this list, you will be unable tolook it up.
Of course, if the word is in your dictionary, it is always possible to go into the dictionary and look up the word directly.This may be inconvenient, but it is the best solution we can offer for this problem until the behavior is standardized across the Kindle product line. The Kindle behavior of blocking lookup of common words while reading may make sense for a native speaker, but not necessarily for a language learner.We recommend that you contact Amazon Customer Service to request that this functionality be supported consistently across the Kindle product line.

It’s hard to imagine how any of us got along without word processors.
The purpose of this mini-editing exercise is to illustrate the splendor of word processing. Had you produced these sentences on a typewriter instead of a computer, changing even a few words would hardly seem worth it. Word processing lets you substitute words at will, move entire blocks of text around with panache, and apply different fonts and typefaces to the characters. You won’t even take a productivity hit swapping typewriter ribbons in the middle of a project.
Before running out to buy Microsoft Word (or another industrial-strength and expensive) word processing program for your Mac, remember that Apple includes a respectable word processor with OS X. The program is TextEdit, and it call s the Applications folder home.
The first order of business when using TextEdit (or pretty much any word processor) is to create a new document. There’s really not much to it. It’s about as easy as opening the program itself. The moment you do so, a window with a large blank area on which to type appears.
Have a look around the window. At the top, you see Untitled because no one at Apple is presumptuous enough to come up with a name for your yet-to-be-produced manuscript.
Notice the blinking vertical line at the upper-left edge of the screen, just below the ruler. That line, called the insertion point, might as well be tapping out Morse code for “start typing here.”
Indeed, you have come to the most challenging point in the entire word processing experience, and it has nothing to do with technology. The burden is on you to produce clever, witty, and inventive prose, lest all that blank space go to waste.
Okay, got it? At the blinking insertion point, type with abandon. Type something original like this:
It was a dark and stormy night
If you typed too quickly, you may have accidentally produced this:
It was a drk and stormy nihgt
Fortunately, your amiable word processor has your best interests at heart. See the dotted red line below drk and nihgt? That’s TextEdit’s not-so-subtle way of flagging a likely typo. (This presumes that you’ve left the default Check Spelling as You Type activated in TextEdit Preferences.)
You can address these snafus in several ways. You can use the computer’s Delete key to wipe out all the letters to the left of the insertion point. (Delete functions like the backspace key on the Smith Coronayou put out to pasture years ago.) After the misspelled word has been quietly sent to Siberia, you can type over the space more carefully. All traces of your sloppiness disappear.
Delete is a wonderfully handy key. You can use it to eliminate a single word such as nihgt. But in this little case study, you have to repair drk too. And using Delete to erase drk means sacrificing and and stormy as well. That’s a bit of overkill.
Use one of the following options instead:
*Use the left-facing arrow key (found on the lower-right side of the keyboard) to move the insertion point to the spot just to the right of the word you want to deep-six. No characters are eliminated when you move the insertion point that way. Only when the insertion point is where it ought to be do you again hire your reliable keyboard hit-man, Delete.
*Eschew the keyboard and click with the mouse to reach this same spot to the right of the misspelled word. Then press Delete.
Now try this helpful remedy. Right-click anywhere on the misspelled word. A list appears with suggestions. Single-click the correct word and, voilà, TextEdit instantly replaces the mistake. Be careful in this example not to choose dork.

Step 2: Can your Mac ’see’ the reader?Plug the CAC reader into an open USB port before proceeding, give it a few moments to install
Step 2a: Click the Apple Icon in the upper left corner of the desktop, select ’About This Mac’
Step 2b: Click ’System Report...’ (button)
Step 2c: Verify the CAC reader shows in Hardware, USB, under USB Device Tree. Different readers will show differently, most readers have no problem in this step. See Step 2c1 for specific reader issues.
Step 2c1: Verify firmware version on your SCR-331 or GSR-202, 202V, 203 CAC, or SCR-3500a reader. If you have a reader other than these 5, Proceed directly to step 3
Step 2c1a-SCR-331 reader
If your reader does not look like this, go to the next step.
In the ’Hardware’ drop down, click ’USB.’ On the right side of the screen under ’USB Device Tree’ the window will display all hardware plugged into the USB ports on your Mac. Look for “SCRx31 USB Smart Card Reader.” If the Smart Card reader is present, look at ’Version’ in the lower right corner of this box: If you have a number below 5.25, you need to update your firmware to 5.25. If you are already at 5.25, your reader is installed on your system, and no further hardware changes are required. You can now Quit System Profiler and continue to Step 3.

Look at the top back of your ID card for these card types. If you have any version other than the six shown below, you need to visit an ID card office and have it replaced. All CACs [other than these six] were supposed to be replaced prior to 1 October 2012.

Step 5: Install the DoD certificates (for Safari and Chrome Users)
Go to Keychain Access Click: Go (top of screen), Utilities, double click Keychain Access.app
(You can also type: keychain access using Spotlight (this is my preferred method)) Select login (under Keychains),and All Items (under Category).

You may notice some of the certificates will have a red circle with a white X . This means your computer does not trust those certificates
You need to manually trust the DoD Root CA 2, 3, 4, & 5 certificates
Double click each of the DoD Root CA certificates, select the triangle next to Trust, in the When using this certificate: select Always Trust, repeat until all 4 do not have the red circle with a white X.

Once you select Always Trust, your icon will have a light blue circle with a white + on it.
The ’bad certs’ that have caused problems for Windows users may show up in the keychain access section on some Macs. These need to be deleted / moved to trash.
The DoD Root CA 2 & 3 you are removing has a light blue frame, leave the yellow frame version. The icons may or may not have a red circle with the white x or DoD Interoperability Root CA 1 or CA 2 certificate DoD Root CA 2 or 3 (light blue frame ONLY) certificate or Federal Bridge CA 2016 or 2013 certificate or Federal Common Policy CAcertificate or or SHA-1 Federal Root CA G2 certificate or US DoD CCEB Interoperability Root CA 1 certificate

NOTE: Firefox will not work on Catalina (10.15.x), or last 4 versions of Mac OS if using the native Apple smartcard ability
Download AllCerts.zip, [remember where you save it].
double click the allcerts.zip file (it’ll automatically extract into a new folder)
Option 1 to install the certificates (semi automated):
From inside the AllCerts extracted folder, select all of the certificates
<control> click (or Right click) the selected certificates, select Open With, Other...
In the Enable (selection box), change to All Applications
Select Firefox, then Open
You will see several dozen browser tabs open up, let it open as many as it wants..
You will eventually start seeing either of the 2 messages shown next
If the certificate is not already in Firefox, a window will pop up stating ’You have been asked to trust a new Certificate Authority (CA).’
Check all three boxes to allow the certificate to: identify websites, identify email users, and identify software developers
or
’Alert This certificate is already installed as a certificate authority.’ Click OK
Once you’ve added all of the certificates...• Click Firefox (word) (upper left of your screen) • Preferences• Advanced (tab)• Press Network under the Advanced Tab • In the Cached Web Content section, click Clear Now (button).• Quit Firefox and restart it

Step 1: Is your CAC reader Mac friendly?
Visit the USB Readers page to verify the CAC reader you have is Mac friendly.

’Some, not all’ CAC readers may need to have a driver installed to make it work.
NOTE: Readers such as: SCR-331 & SCR-3500A may need a firmware update (NO OTHER Readers need firmware updates).

Step 2: Can your Mac ’see’ the reader?Plug the CAC reader into an open USB port before proceeding, give it a few moments to install
Step 2a: Click the Apple Icon in the upper left corner of the desktop, select ’About This Mac’
Step 2b: Click ’System Report...’ (button)
Step 2c: Verify the CAC reader shows in Hardware, USB, under USB Device Tree. Different readers will show differently, most readers have no problem in this step. See Step 2c1 for specific reader issues.
Step 2c1: Verify firmware version on your SCR-331 or GSR-202, 202V, 203 CAC, or SCR-3500a reader. If you have a reader other than these 5, Proceed directly to step 3
Step 2c1a-SCR-331 reader
If your reader does not look like this, go to the next step.
In the ’Hardware’ drop down, click ’USB.’ On the right side of the screen under ’USB Device Tree’ the window will display all hardware plugged into the USB ports on your Mac. Look for “SCRx31 USB Smart Card Reader.” If the Smart Card reader is present, look at ’Version’ in the lower right corner of this box: If you have a number below 5.25, you need to update your firmware to 5.25. If you are already at 5.25, your reader is installed on your system, and no further hardware changes are required. You can now Quit System Profiler and continue to Step 3.
Step 2c1b-SCR-3500A reader
If you have the SCR3500A P/N:905430-1 CAC reader,you may need to install this driver, as the one that installs automatically will not work on most Macs. Hold the control key [on your keyboard] when clicking the .pkg file [with your mouse], select [the word] Open
Step 3: Verify which version of MacOS do you have?

Step 3a: Click the Apple Icon in the upper left corner of your desktop and select ’About This Mac’

Step 4: Figure out which CAC (ID Card) you have

Look at the top back of your ID card for these card types. If you have any version other than the six shown below, you need to visit an ID card office and have it replaced. All CACs [other than these six] were supposed to be replaced prior to 1 October 2012.

Go to Keychain Access Click: Go (top of screen), Utilities, double click Keychain Access.app
(You can also type: keychain access using Spotlight (this is my preferred method)) Select login (under Keychains),and All Items (under Category).

Double click each of the DoD Root CA certificates, select the triangle next to Trust, in the When using this certificate: select Always Trust, repeat until all 4 do not have the red circle with a white X.

Once you select Always Trust, your icon will have a light blue circle with a white + on it.
The ’bad certs’ that have caused problems for Windows users may show up in the keychain access section on some Macs. These need to be deleted / moved to trash.
The DoD Root CA 2 & 3 you are removing has a light blue frame, leave the yellow frame version. The icons may or may not have a red circle with the white x or DoD Interoperability Root CA 1 or CA 2 certificate DoD Root CA 2 or 3 (light blue frame ONLY) certificate or Federal Bridge CA 2016 or 2013 certificate or Federal Common Policy CAcertificate or or SHA-1 Federal Root CA G2 certificate or US DoD CCEB Interoperability Root CA 1 certificate

Download AllCerts.zip, [remember where you save it].
double click the allcerts.zip file (it’ll automatically extract into a new folder)
Option 1 to install the certificates (semi automated):
From inside the AllCerts extracted folder, select all of the certificates
<control> click (or Right click) the selected certificates, select Open With, Other...
In the Enable (selection box), change to All Applications
Select Firefox, then Open
You will see several dozen browser tabs open up, let it open as many as it wants..
You will eventually start seeing either of the 2 messages shown next
If the certificate is not already in Firefox, a window will pop up stating ’You have been asked to trust a new Certificate Authority (CA).’
Check all three boxes to allow the certificate to: identify websites, identify email users, and identify software developers
or
’Alert This certificate is already installed as a certificate authority.’ Click OK
Once you’ve added all of the certificates...• Click Firefox (word) (upper left of your screen) • Preferences• Advanced (tab)• Press Network under the Advanced Tab • In the Cached Web Content section, click Clear Now (button).• Quit Firefox and restart it
